Is Ann Arbor a good place for solar power?
Yes! Ann Arbor, Michigan and the surrounding towns in Washtenaw County - Milan, Ypsilanti, Manchester, Saline, Chelsea, Dexter - are all excellent locales for generating solar energy. Yes, it is true that we must endure long, cold winters here in Michigan, but luckily the cold does not negatively affect solar energy generation. In fact, there is data to show that solar panel installations actually become more efficient and are more productive in cold weather. As far as the sunlight, while there are fewer hours, our Michigan rooftops will still receive enough sunlight to power our homes through the winter. Additionally, solar panels work even when it is cloudy. Bottom line: there are many wintry locations in the United States such as New York, Indianapolis and Burlington, Vermont that are some of the country’s top solar producers, and Ann Arbor can see the light, too!
How much do solar panels cost?
The cost of a solar panel installation for one home or business to another will vary greatly depending on a few factors, including the size of the system needed for your building and roof space required, your current energy usage, how much electricity are you trying to offset, and how much shade/sunlight your property receives. Because of these variables, it’s best to contact a licensed and experienced solar power contractor who can tailor an estimate to your situation. Once we survey the site, we will draw up an estimate that will maximize your solar output while reducing the cost. Our goal at A2 Solar Source is to make solar power an affordable, achievable dream- not a pipe dream.
What is the maintenance required for solar panels?
There is very little to zero maintenance required. At the most you can occasionally dust or sweep them off, but it’s typically not necessary as most debris will naturally fall from the surface since they are installed at an angle. Snow also typically does not need to be removed, as it will melt or fall from the panels before output is affected.
Will solar panels increase the value of my home?
In many cases, yes! Studies have shown that buyers are willing to pay more for a home with a solar power system than for comparable homes without. A comprehensive review of home sales data by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that each 1-kilowatt (kW) increase in rooftop solar system size adds $5,911 to a home’s resale value. Just another reason why going green isn’t just great for the planet, but also for your finances.
Is my roof adequate for solar panels?
There are several factors to consider when determining whether your roof is right for solar. Check out our page on the topic of rooftop solar. A rooftop assessment will be part of our initial site survey.
How long does the solar panel installation process take?
The actual solar installation will only take a few days. From start to finish, considering initial evaluation and site assessment, scheduling the installation, performing the installation and connection, will take between 4-8 weeks.

Can solar panels be damaged by severe weather?
While it is rare, from time to time we can get powerful storms in Washtenaw County that can generate hail, high winds and lightning. Luckily, solar panels are highly tested products and are built to withstand severe weather of all kinds for many years. Solar panels are typically tested to various UL, CSA, and ISO standards to ensure damage is zero or minimal. Ultimately, you need to work with a licensed solar contractor who will ensure the system is properly grounded to minimize the chance of a lightning strike and to install the panels so as to minimize wind impact.
